Puerto Rico Declares Epidemic Over Dengue Cases Spike

PUERTO RICO – Puerto Rico’s health secretary declared an epidemic following a spike in dengue cases.

The U.S. territory of 3 point 2 million people has reported at least five hundred and forty-nine cases so far this year, compared with the more than one thousand two hundred cases last year.

The majority of cases have been reported in the capital of San Juan.

More than 340 people have been hospitalised for the mosquito-borne virus, according to the island’s health department.

Puerto Rico last declared a dengue epidemic in 2012.
