VJ, Donovan Ranked Among Top Freshman

U.S.A. – A pair of senior men’s national basketball team players head into their freshman seasons of college basketball with lofty expectations.

VJ Edgecombe of the Baylor Bears and Donovan Freeman of the Syracuse Orange were both ranked among the top 10 freshmen headed into the fall campaign  by NCAA.com’s Andy Katz.

Edgecombe, a 6’4″ guard for the Baylor Bears was ranked no.6 overall and is the highest ranked recruit for the bears in over a decade.

He was also named the Gatorade Player of the Year in New York for two straight season, a McDonald’s All-American and was invited to the Nike Hoops Summit.

Freeman, also a McDonald’s All-American, is a five-star recruit, is ranked 6th overall and first among power forwards in the Class of 2024 by espn.com. 

Both players made their national team debuts at the 2024 olympic qualifiers for team bahamas.

Edgecombe was the breakout star and averaged 16.5 points, 5.5 rebounds and 3.8 assists per game.

Freeman saw most of his time in the Acropolis Tournament and scored six against Greece.

Track and Field

First time Olympian Charisma Taylor continued her season at a unique event aimed at showcasing the women of track and field. 

Taylor finished sixth in the 100m hurdles in 13.58 seconds at the inaugural Athlos NYC Meet at Icahn Stadium in New York.

In a stacked field that including the reigning olympic champion, Masai Russell, Jasmine Camacho-Quinn of Puerto Rico was first in 12.36 seconds.

The event featured 36 elite female athletes, including Olympians and reigning champions from the paris 2024 olympics.

The meet’s prize money was double that of the Diamond League Championships offering $60,000 for first place winners, $25,000 for second place, $10,000 for third, and prizes down to $2,500 for sixth place in each category.

Each race winner also received a Tiffany & Co. Crown. 

Soccer

The U.B. Mingoes men’s soccer team struggled on the road in their latest road trip to face Atlantis University.

The Mingoes came up short against the Atlanteans with a 3-1 loss in the second game back-to-back matchup at the Kendall Soccer Parks in Miami, Florida.

Jeremy Holland scored the lone goal for U.B.

The Atlanteans took a 2-0 lead at half-time, and at the 52nd minute of the second holland cleaned up a free-kick from atop the 18-yard box to score UB’s lone goal.

Next up for the Mingoes will be a trip to Grand Bahama to play matches on October 4th and 5th.

Equestrian

Equestrian Bahamas will host a special clinic this weekend featuring the coach that recently led Team Bahamas to a historic performance in France.

International rider and trainer Rai Burch from Bermuda will headline the two day event, hosted September 28 at  Camperdown Equestrian Center and September 29 at Mariposa Stables.

In July, Burch, coached Team Bahamas to their historic bronze medal finish at the World Clubs Tournament jumping show in Lamotte-Beuvron, France.

China topped the point standings, followed by the Czech Republic in second. Italy, and France rounded out the top five.

It was the first time the Bahamas Equestrian Federation fielded a team for  an international show jumping event. 

As a competitor, Burch has competed in multiple grand prix events, but has made his most significant mark as a coach, guiding athletes to success at the youth Olympic Games and other elite level competitions.
