COVID Fatigue Undermining Protocols

NASSAU, BAHAMAS – Amid the recent steady rise in COVID-19 cases, Ministry of Health Registrar Dr Philip Swann says COVID fatigue may be to blame for the uptick.

This as he also addressed COVID cases in schools and the rationale behind approving carnival-related events even as numbers climb.

The registrar’s comments come after several New Providence schools shut down campuses this week due to an increase in COVID-19 cases and exposures among staff and students.

A Ministry of Health statement indicates as of May 10th, 38 cases had been reported in schools across the country in the previous four weeks.

It stated: “These cases were dispersed over a number of schools and represent a small proportion of the overall COVID-19 caseload. The ministry also confirms that no clusters have been reported within schools in the Family Islands.”

But the Ministry of Health said it did not recommend the closure of any schools.

Dr Swann was also asked about the decision to grant permission for a weekend of carnival events, that includes a beach fete and road march.

With health officials giving the go ahead for the three-day carnival event, which is slated to happen in less than two weeks, Dr Swann urged attendees to be responsible.
