NASSAU, BAHAMAS – Health Minister Dr. Michael Darville acknowledges concerns about the new hospital, emphasizing that environmental risks are a top priority for his ministry.

Residents, environmental specialists, and the opposition have criticized the chosen western location, highlighting its potential impact on the surrounding environment.

Dr. Darville says government is now one step closer to addressing these issues.

Then there’s the issue of staffing the $290 million hospital upon completion.

Bahamas Nurses Union President Muriel Lightbourne expressed her concerns to Our News recently, saying, “I don’t know if they’re going to pull nurses out of a hat.”

Dr. Darville acknowledged her statement with a smile, and assured that, for now, government is addressing the short-term staffing needs.

The Health Ministry has previously relied on international nurses, particularly from Ghana, to lighten the load. Dr. Darville confirmed that this practice will continue.
