Abaco Residents Call for Mental Health Assistance
ABACO, BAHAMAS – Residents on the island of Abaco say while they’ve heard the promises, more must be done to meet the psycho-social needs.
ABACO, BAHAMAS – The subject of mental health awareness becoming more prevalent in Bahamian communities, particularly as it relates to providing assistance to those affected by hurricane Dorian. Residents on the island of Abaco say while they’ve heard the promises, more must be done to meet the psycho-social needs.
Sarone Kennedy has been a shelter manager on the island of Abaco since 1999.
Having experienced his fair share of disasters, he says he has been an advocate for mental health services for decades, and he is pushing that cause even more, post Dorian.
District Superintendent of Education, Dominique Russell says she believes that Bahamians did not see the value of mental health support until recently.
Dr. George Charite adding that The Crisis Center at his medical facility is available for all residents in need of support.
