NASSAU, BAHAMAS – It was an emotional scene as government officials signed the book of condolences for Social Services, Broadcasting, and Information Minister Obie Wilchcombe

His family, friends, and colleagues paid respects to the veteran politician in the hallowed halls where he represented the people of West Grand Bahama and Bimini for more than 15 years.

This is just one step on the road to his state burial Thursday.

Former Prime Minister Perry Christie appointed Wilchcombe to his cabinet twice and he was there to see his friend he never thought he would have to memorialize.

Foreign Affairs Minister Fred Mitchell says he has to be remembered in a permanent way.

Wilchcombe’s impact however wasn’t only felt in his constituency and among party officials as Free National Movement Michael Pintard explains, his reached crossed party lines.

The fellow GB MP says Wilchcombe was never one to hold a grudge.

But parliamentarians past and present weren’t the only ones to pay tribute to Wilchcombe.

Parliament Square, at times was filled with civilians, clergymen, members of the judiciary, and law enforcement – all looking to pay their respects to the late cabinet minister.

Police Commissioner Clayton Fernander says he met with the social service minister recently on a new initiative, one of them sought to assist victims of domestic violence.
