NASSAU , BAHAMAS – For hundreds of students at Anatol Rodgers High School, Career Day was more than just a chance to step away from the classroom.

It was an opportunity to explore what the future could hold.

More than 35 organizations set up in the school’s gymnasium, giving students access to representatives who could explain the different career paths available to them right here in The Bahamas.

At the Bahamas Agricultural and Industrial Corporation, Officer Vanessa Fox says the students’ enthusiasm made the outreach effort particularly rewarding.

“It brings me joy to see the smiles on the children’s faces and to see how excited they are to be here and to learn about what we offer at BAIC.”

While agriculture was among the areas on display, organizers also wanted students to understand that many organizations offer a much broader range of career opportunities than they might expect.

Immigration Officer Braddesha Lloyd says the department has different sections that allow people with a variety of interests and skills to find their place.

“Sometimes there’s a misconception that we only do one thing, so we’re here to let students know that there are various sections in Immigration. So, if you want to do something technical, like in IT, we have that available. If you want to do something in training, more educational, we have that section available. Me, I’m in the Public Relations Unit, so we’re all about engaging students.”

And for the students, the fair opened doors they hadn’t considered before.

Kaylin Griffin – Student, Anatol Rodgers High School

“Honestly, I really like the career fair because I get to experience and look at more careers that I didn’t even really know I could do, like being at BNT as a park attendant or looking at BAMSI and also Rotary.”

Alex Joseph – Student, Anatol Rodgers High School

“I feel like there’s a great number of agencies, and I feel as if it’s a very good event that actually should be held every year to help kids find out what they want to do if they’re struggling to find what they want to do out there in the world.”

And educators say the event is about connecting classroom lessons with real-world experiences.

Shavanna Darville – District Superintendent, Southern New Providence Secondary Schools District, MOEST

“Our graduates, our 2027 graduates, have an opportunity to sign up to find out about what is available out there for them as a career, be it in the workplace or in school, because we also have CAPAs here.”
